Recently, I’ve reached out to my hometown newspaper—the Detroit Free Press—because they haven’t reconciled that rift between “traditional journalism” and “social journalism” and online content production. One of the things that I’ve been doing is evaluating where these gaps exist and offering to help these people out. But! While they have the social media teams in place, their teams are not pro-actively working to help transform their outlets into forward-thinking news outlets. They don’t understand how to repackage reporting into engaging stories that sell themselves on the web; they don’t understand listicles and slideshows. Neither are the future, but they are part of the present.
The weirdest part is that in having these discussions, these small-town newspapers want nothing to do with this kind of advice; they don’t know how to process the things you tell them, perhaps chalking it up to big city naïveté (funny how that is!)
How do you tell the Detroit Free Press: “Your content is stale and you’re not writing for the people who go to college at your state’s top public schools; you’re not writing for the people who are the likeliest to share it across social media thereby attracting national and international pageviews, thereby turning your website into a thing that can make money for you.”?
It’s so bizarre that the media culture of the Midwest—sans outlets like Chicagoist, perhaps—is so barren that even Gawker circa 2006 would be revolutionary.BAM
Some strictly newspaper journalists are still very deeply bigoted about online news. They’re a bit snobby about newspaper because it’s a very different medium than online writing and they’re partial to one thing over the other. It is inevitable though. Papers are dying and they need that online extension. It’s asinine to think otherwise.
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is starting a new Ipad extra daily newspaper that’s interesting. It’s called the Pittsburgh Press. It has content that is original and not just cut and paste from the regular newspaper. I would love a good Ipad alternative newspaper.
I hope Rick Santorum gets denied the chance to be The Doctor’s new companion because the Doctor claims that Barack Obama asked first and there’s only so much room in the TARDIS when everyone knows that’s not true.
Hahahaha. What a diss…
